How Long Do Probiotics Take to Work for Dogs?

How Long Do Probiotics Take to Work for Dogs?

Short answer: some owners notice firmer, more regular stools within a few days of starting a probiotic, but for general gut support most guidance suggests giving it every day for four to six weeks before judging whether it suits your dog. Every dog is different, and a probiotic is a daily habit rather than a quick fix.

What a probiotic actually does

Your dog's gut is home to billions of bacteria that help break down food. A probiotic adds more of the friendly kinds. A prebiotic (such as inulin, FOS or chicory root) is the fibre those bacteria feed on. Many dog chews, including ours, combine the two so the added bacteria have something to live on.

A realistic timeline

  • Days 1 to 7: start with half the normal amount. A little extra wind or a softer stool is not unusual while the gut adjusts.
  • Weeks 1 to 2: move up to the full daily amount. Some owners start to see more consistent stools.
  • Weeks 4 to 6: a fair point to review. Look at stool consistency, wind, appetite and how settled your dog seems after meals.
  • Ongoing: benefits tend to last only while you keep giving it, which is why many owners make it part of the daily routine.

Things that make a probiotic more likely to help

  • Give it every day. Skipping days makes it hard to tell whether it is working.
  • Keep everything else steady. If you change food, treats and supplements in the same week, you won't know which change made the difference. Introduce one thing at a time.
  • Change food slowly. Sudden diet changes are a common cause of upset tummies. PDSA advises keeping your dog's diet as consistent as possible and making any change gradually.
  • Check the dose on the label. Look for the number of live bacteria (CFU) per serving, not just "contains probiotics".

When to call your vet instead

A probiotic supports normal digestion. It is not a treatment for illness. PDSA advises contacting your vet if your dog:

  • has diarrhoea for more than a few days, or on and off for two weeks or more
  • has blood or mucus in their poo
  • is very young or very old, or seems unwell in other ways (vomiting, not eating, lethargic)
  • may have eaten something harmful (call straight away)
  • is on medication, especially anti-inflammatories, and develops diarrhoea

How Lakshio Probiotic Chews fit in

Lakshio Probiotic Chews provide 6 billion CFU from five probiotic strains per 2 chews, with prebiotics, digestive enzymes and pumpkin, in a chicken-flavour soft chew. Daily amounts: up to 11 kg, 1 chew; 12 to 34 kg, 2 chews; over 34 kg, 3 chews. Start with half for the first week. Each 300 g tub holds 120 chews, so a tub lasts about four months for a small dog. They are made in a GMP and ISO 9001-certified facility.

Quick questions

Can I give a probiotic with my dog's food?

Yes. Many owners give the chew with a meal or as a treat afterwards.

Can puppies have probiotic chews?

Check the age guidance on the product and ask your vet for young puppies, especially if they have an upset tummy.

Can I use it alongside antibiotics?

Ask your vet first. They can advise whether and when to give a probiotic around a course of medication.
